Deadline extended for CASE media fellowship at VBI

The future of biotechnology through the eyes of bioinformatics

Apply for a CASE Media Fellowship to visit our state-of-the-art facility and participate in a two-day, hands-on workshop on May 8-9, 2003. Located in Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center, VBI is nestled in Blacksburg alongside the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. The fellowship is free and lodging will be provided by Virginia Tech.

Genomic research generates volumes of data every day that are vital for our continued understanding of genetic interactions and how they affect our lives. Bioinformatics is a rapidly emerging field that weds biotechnology with computer science to interpret these data. By seeing the technologies scientists use to analyze the building blocks of life, media experts can better understand the myriad applications of genomics and fundamental research being conducted in mathematical modeling, computer simulation, bioengineering, and phylogenetics, as well as practical applications of software development and supercomputing.

CASE fellows will learn first-hand in VBI's Core Laboratory via workshops and in-depth seminars. Media participants will be immersed in both biotechnology data generation and its interpretation through high-performance supercomputers. VBI's PathPort projectc�a global pathogen portal storing and organizing biological information on known pathogensc�will serve as a ready example of how biotechnology and computer science have merged to create the exciting field of bioinformatics.
