1. Press Room

The Fall Meeting Press Room is Room 111 of the Moscone Convention Center (same room as last year). Moscone is located at 747 Howard Street, San Francisco, California.. Room 111 is down the escalator from the main entrance on the north side of Howard Street.

The phone number for incoming calls is +1-415-905-1007.
The phone number for incoming faxes is +1-415-905-1008.
Please provide the above numbers to anyone who may have to reach you at Fall Meeting.

The Press Room is open daily during the meeting from 7:30 a.m. until at least 5:30 p.m. It will remain open as long as feasible to accommodate journalists who are writing and filing stories. The room is equipped with phones and phone lines for modem connections (no charge for business calls), a fax machine, a computer with Internet access and printer, and a photocopy machine.

Breakfast will be provided in the Press Room from 7:30 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m., daily.

Press releases relevant to the meeting will be available in the Press Room, as provided by participating scientists and their institutions.

The Press Briefing Room is Room 112, adjacent to the Press Room. This is the venue for press conferences, with one exception. It is equipped with microphones and a mult box for recording sound directly from the room's microphones. When not in use for press conferences, the Briefing Room may be used for interviews.

3. Gala Press Evening

Day: Friday, December 6
Time: 5:00-10:00 p.m.

Whether you live in the Bay Area or are attending Fall Meeting from afar, keep Friday evening open. We have organized, in cooperation with Northern California Science Writers Association, an evening of fun, information, and camaraderie, not to mention good food and drink.

*****
Press Reception
Time: 5:00 p.m.
Place: Press Room, Room 111 Moscone

Put down your quill, turn off your modem, and relax with your science writing colleagues at the end of Fall Meeting's long first day. Greet your old friends and meet new ones at our annual wine and cheese reception. As usual, we have invited members of NCSWA who are not otherwise covering Fall Meeting to join us.

*****
Book and Author Program for Science Writers
Time: 5:45 p.m.
Place: Press Briefing Room, Room 112

Two authors who regularly attend Fall Meeting will discuss their new books in this program, which is designed specifically for science writers.

Richard Anthes, President of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), is co-editor of Hurricane! Coping with Disaster (AGU).

Hurricane research implies something more than science. It is the key to saving lives and mitigating economic damage. From the Galveston catastrophe of 1900, where more than 8,000 people died, to the economic devastation wrought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, scientists have striven to understand and track hurricanes, while charting their societal effects. Hurricane! Coping with Disaster tells the dramatic history of that effort by leading meteorologists, the men and women who brought hurricane science into the 21st century, and those who sustain it today. Although not a trade book, it is intended for both scientists and lay readers interested in climatology and hurricane research.

Nigel Hey, freelance writer and former public information officer at Sandia National Laboratory, will discuss Solar System (Weidenfeld & Nicolson , London.; Sterling Publishing, New York).

Solar System is a general-readership book about the planets and other bodies of the solar system and the technologies (i.e. telescopes, spacecraft, launch vehicles, sensors/imagery, telemetry, guidance and control) that are employed in their exploration. Solar System is described as "a laptop coffee-table book," because of its attractive layout, copious illustrations, including original paintings by Malcolm Godwin, and high quality production. It includes twelve essays by experts including Arthur C. Clarke and Freeman Dyson, who take on topics ranging from space navigation to the peculiarities of Uranus and Venus. Hey describes it as a "nonfiction adventure story," designed for readers new to planetary science as well as college students seeking supplementary material to their textbooks.

NCSWA Holiday Party
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Place: Jillian's, in the Sony Metreon, 101 Fourth Street (next door to Moscone Convention Center)

(The following information was provided by NCSWA. This is not an AGU event.)

Chalk up your pool cue and break out the dancing shoes for NCSWA's holiday bash at Jillian's, a restaurant and late-night dance club in San Francisco's bustling Sony Metreon entertainment complex. Join us for hors d'oeuvres - enough to satisfy a hearty dinner appetite - and schmoozing in Jillian's billiard room. The 10 pool tables are free, courtesy of NCSWA, and we have the room for mixing and partying until 10 p.m. At 9, Jillian's turns into a dance club, which attendees are welcome to join. But the Metreon offers many other options, ranging from virtual bowling and video games to an IMAX movie or a trip through Where the Wild Things Are.

Jillian's is creating a spread that includes a variety of finger foods, passed around by butlers and laid out at table stations. We've planned for about 10 pieces per person. The hors d'oeuvres include: Chicken skewers with satay
Filet mignon with teriyaki glaze
Vegetable spring rolls
Mushroom and goat cheese wrapped in phyllo
Seared ahi tuna with sesame and potato
Beef skewers with pineapple
Roasted vegetable pizzas
Pepperoni pizzas
Boneless buffalo wings
Chicken quesadillas with salsa
Chips and salsa
Assorted cheese platter
Vegetable trays
Assorted treats and desserts

No-host bar

Cost: $30 per person for NCSWA members. Because NCSWA is partly subsidizing the food, each member may bring only one guest at the price of $30. All other guests, including AGU attendees, are $35 each. Students are $25.

Send checks made out to "NCSWA" to:

Bob Sanders
1512 Holly St.
Berkeley, CA 94703
(Note: Do not make or send checks to AGU!)

Deadline: Jillian's needs a final count 5 days before the event. If you want to attend, get your check in the mail today!
