Elham Ghabbour and Geoffrey Davies of Northeastern University Hundreds of scientists from around the globe will gather on the campus of Northeastern University from July 21 --26 for the 20th Anniversary Conference of the International Humic Substances Society. The event is being held in Blackman Auditorium on the Northeastern University campus. The biennial conference returns to the United States twenty years after the first conferences in Colorado in 1983. JULY 27, 2002 The conference will be followed by the Humic Substances Seminar VI, a series of lectures by top researchers on the practical applications of such substances, on July 27. Held in Egan Research Center on the Northeastern University campus. Drs. Elham Ghabbour and Geoffrey Davies are the Chairs and originators of the seminar. Humic substances have been acknowledged for nearly two centuries, and their importance to agricultural ecosystems --providing soil with rich nutrients -- has long been valued. But in recent years scientists have been discovering practical applications that improve the quality of life. At the Humic Substances Seminar VI researchers will share their practical developments, like how humic substances can help regulate desert climates by binding to sand particles, helping each grain retain water and nutrients which also helps make the sand fertile. There are many applications of humic substances to be discussed, including nuclear waste confinement, carbon sequestration and soil and water remediation. Plenty for everyone! Cost for Registration: for IHSS Members: $500 Non-Members: $550 Student IHSS Members: $400 Student Non-Members: $450 For more information, see http://www.hagroup.neu.edu |
