NSF director to address interdisciplinary science and women's issues at national chemistry meeting

August 15, 2002 Rita Colwell, director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), will participate in two American Chemical Society (ACS) Presidential Events at the ACS national meeting in Boston, Mass., August 18-21, 2002.

At a symposium on interdisciplinary science, Colwell will discuss NSF initiatives such as interdisciplinary research centers with education components; Integrative Graduate Education Research and Traineeships, which team graduate students with faculty to conduct interdisciplinary research; and interdisciplinary budget priorities, including nanotechnology, information technology and biocomplexity.

A panel on diversity will examine the factors needed to ensure the continuing success of women, minorities and young scientists in chemistry. Colwell will review the statistics on underrepresented groups in science and NSF initiatives to spark change through both individuals and institutions.
