At the dawn of the 21st century, the bionic human is emerging, a living being supplemented by an artificial heart, liver, kidneys, eyes, ears. Cell lines will soon create regenerated tissue to complement man-made bits and factory components -- and before long the use of such replacement parts will be medicine's standard.

The American Society for Artificial Internal Organs ASAIO) has long been the home of next-generation medicine, and now the society is inviting the medical and scientific media to get a glimpse of cutting-edge research in a wide range of bionic technologies. For the first time, a comprehensive slate of news briefings will be offered at this year's annual ASAIO meeting, to be held June 13-15 at the Hilton New York in New York City. Among the news making advances are successful efforts to grow human arteries in a lab, the new science of transplanting limbs, growing organs from animal cells, making skin from hair, as well as next-generation hearts, bionic livers, and robot tele-surgery.
