
March 2002 From Virginia Tech Seminar addresses role of wireless technologies in disaster response Wireless communications can play a critical role in homeland defense. To examine that role, a seminar on Tuesday, April 23, will explore "The Role of Wireless Technologies in Disaster Response and Preparedness - Strengths from the Rural Heartland." Sponsored by the Center for Wireless Telecommunications of Virginia Tech, the event will be held in Taylor Hall on the James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., since the I-81 location of that campus is convenient.The seminar will introduce and explain the use of wireless technology and equipment that will enable improved service in both urban and rural settings. Satellite and terrestrial systems will be discussed in connection with homeland defense. A special session will be held that will address the broader impact that high speed communications can have in rural areas.
