
October 2001 From Field Museum Field Museum exhibit of rare archaeological finds examines life of CleopatraWHAT: Chicago’s Field Museum invites media to preview Cleopatra of Egypt: From History to Myth, an exhibition of more than 350 artifacts that tell the story of the powerful queen whose appeal has endured from ancient times to modern popular culture. The Field Museum is the only North American venue for this groundbreaking exhibition of rare archeological finds including sculpture, coins, metalwork, jewelry, ancient frescoes and mosaics. Internationally known marine archeologist Franck Goddio will be in attendance and available for interviews. Goddio has recovered several important artifacts relating to Cleopatra from the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. WHEN: The preview will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 16. It will begin at 6 a.m. to accommodate morning TV and radio programs. A second opening will occur at 9 a.m. (media are advised to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for the second presentation.) All print and electronic media are welcome to attend either or both presentations. The exhibition opens to the public on Oct. 20 and runs through March 3, 2002. WHERE: The Field Museum, 1400 S. DETAILS: More than 2,000 years after her death, Cleopatra stands among the most famous historical figures of all time. Cleopatra of Egypt brings together priceless archeological finds and masterpieces of ancient art drawn from the great museums of the world. Organized by The British Museum in collaboration with the Fondazione Memmo in Rome, Cleopatra of Egypt was previously shown in London and Rome. Chicago’s Field Museum is the exhibition’s third and final venue.
