University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers will announce a new national $34 million effort to learn whether it's possible to help U.S. adolescent girls become more fit and avoid obesity-related health problems at a 1:30 p.m. news briefing Thursday (Oct. 5) in 231 Rosenau Hall at the UNC-CH School of Public Health. Reporters are invited to the briefing in the Mayse Center, which will outline the research project based at UNC-CH and involving six other major U.S. universities.

Television crews can park just south of Rosenau Hall, which is accessible via a driveway that turns east off Pittsboro Street. Pittsboro Street runs south one-way behind the School of Public Health. Other reporters can park in visitor spaces behind News Services at 210 Pittsboro St. or in the Health Affairs parking deck on Manning Drive.

Possible visuals reporters might to consider pursuing before or after the event include shots of seventh grade girls exercising -- or not exercising -- since the latter is a national problem the research effort will address. In recent years, obesity has doubled among U.S. children and type 2 diabetes, an obesity-related illness, has jumped significantly.
