World leaders, public health officials to meet at third annual conference on HIV/AIDS

Leading International Scientists to Reveal Breakthroughs in AIDS Research

VIENNA, Austria -- World leaders, physicians, economists, government and public health officials, pharmaceutical manufacturers and AIDS activists from around the world will meet here October 11 - 13 to present, debate and discuss the economic, ethical and human rights issues underlying healthcare resource allocation.

The keynote speaker is Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, who will speak about the "Consequences of a Fragmented Response to the Global Healthcare Access Crisis." Among the more than 50 speakers are Ugandan Health Minister Chrispus Kiyonga and Zambian Health Minister Nkandu Luo.

Joseph Saba, M.D., IAPAC Conference Chair and Clinical Research Specialist at the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Geneva said; "The astounding medical and scientific progress achieved over the past decades is enjoyed by the few and inaccessible to the many. We must prevent this gap from growing much wider in the future, by exploring practical solutions for access to care and health services today, and by accelerating the pace of AIDS vaccine research, development and preparedness."

During the three-day symposium, leaders from around the world will debate, discuss and present never before published data on a variety of issues including:

  • World trade reform, intellectual property rights, pharmaceutical patents and the TRIPS Agreement
  • Leveraging industry investment in HIV vaccine research and development
  • Health and human economics of prevention interventions, infant feeding and antiretroviral drugs
  • Debt relief in relation to healthcare
  • Perspectives on burgeoning epidemics and access throughout Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa
