What Paul and Pamela don't know: Medical breakthroughs at risk

A panel of patients, scientists and research veterinarians will discuss the misconceptions Paul Mc Cartney, Pamela Anderson Lee and much of the public have about animal research in medicine. This press briefing occurs just three days before Paul presents an award to Pamela at a highly-publicized PETA Hollywood fundraiser.

PETA is calling its event a Millennium Gala, but as we approach the Millennium a real reason for celebration is that people are living longer and healthier lives than ever before. Animal research is at the heart of virtually every medical breakthrough of the 20th Century, and will play an important role in discoveries for human and animal health in the 21st Century. Nevertheless, PETA is seeking the abolition of this important medical resource.

The patients, scientists and veterinarians on the panel will illustrate how animal rights groups use Paul and Pamela, as well as other celebrity supporters such as Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger and Bill Maher to draw the public's attention to its false claims about animal research.

People living with AIDS, breast cancer and other diseases will join researchers who are on the front lines of medical discoveries--scientists and veterinarians who, in their quest to improve human and animal health, have personally faced the wrath of animal activists. The panel will talk about specific instances in which medical research in California and across the country has been harmed by the opposition of animal rights groups.

Celebrities--and the public--will be urged to make the connection between animal research and the ongoing work of scientists to improve our health and well-being.
