National Science Board To Solicit Input On Developing Human Capital And Building Science And Engineering Infrastructure

The National Science Board (NSB) will hold a public hearing in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on October 7, hosted by the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. The hearing will focus on exemplary efforts of the Commonwealth to connect K-12 and higher education systems and develop human capital in science, mathematics and engineering. The University has innovatively combined a number of NSF-funded programs to advance education reform K-16, improve the school-to-workforce transition, and increase the nation's production of Hispanic Ph.D. scientists and engineers.

The 24-member NSB advises the President and the Congress on science policy issues and oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF), a federal agency that funds research and education projects in all 50 states and U.S. Territories. In FY 1997, NSF's total funding for K-16 and beyond education projects of all types exceeded $600 million. The NSB has selected Puerto Rico for the hearing in part because of its success in synergizing several programs designed to enhance science and engineering capabilities of students. Among the programs engaged in this model system are: Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research; Statewide Systemic Initiatives; Model Institutions of Excellence; Centers for Research and Education in Science and Technology; and Alliances for Minority Participation.

Six members of the NSB Committee on Education and Human Resources will hear from educators and administrators, as well as business/industry and school partners. This third and final hearing follows hearings held in Los Angeles and Chicago earlier this year.
