Chemistry In SportsBOSTON, Mass.-- Chemistry steps to the plate during the national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, being held here Aug. 23-27, as top professionals in both chemistry and sports discuss the special bonds that unite the two fields. The starting lineup for a special forum entitled "From Benzene Rings to Olympic Rings" includes chemist Tom Kennedy, director of research and development for Massachusetts-based Spalding Sports Worldwide, Dr. Marisa Pedulla, member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic judo team, and Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis Eckersley. The forum will be held at the Society's Industry Pavilion in the Hynes Convention Center on Aug. 25, and is open to meeting registrants and members of the media. As director of Spalding R&D, Kennedy is in a unique position to talk about the latest scientific advances and trends that could be incorporated into future sports equipment. An avid golfer, he is currently working on a new golf ball that will give women and seniors a little extra yardage on the fairways. Olympian Pedulla, who started her judo career in Newburyport, Mass., won an unprecedented four consecutive collegiate national judo championships while pursuing her degree in chemistry, which she received summa cum laude. Now a researcher at Washington State University, she will discuss the similarities between being a world-class athlete and a scientist. Eckersley, who returned to the Red Sox this season after a nearly 15 year absence, is a six-time Major League All Star and was head coach for the Massachusetts Special Olympics softball team in 1982. "The Eck," as he is known to Boston fans, will be available to sign baseballs.
