There is plenty of food on the menu at the British Association Annual Festival of Science from 7-12 September 1997, at the University of Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Among the 400 talks, debates, visits, exhibitions, displays and hands-on activities at the festival are three sessions on food covering public attitudes toward genetically engineered meat, food labelling, appetite control, animal foods and ethinicity, diet and health.

Health topics under the spotlight include gene-based drug discovery, wound adhesives, birth defects, and delusional systems and the brain. The president's day (Monday 7 September) takes the theme of the environment and will run four sessions concurrently on the natural environment, the man-made environment, social environment and the entrepreneural environment, at which Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry will give the keynote address.
